The Eagle: Republic of Texas group targeted by authorities

by admin on March 4, 2015

Federal and state officials served a search warrant at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Bryan on Saturday morning.

Brazos County authorities said the warrant stemmed from a subpoena sent to 198th District Judge Rex Emerson by the Republic of Texas, a group claiming Texas was illegally annexed by the United States and is, therefore, still an independent republic. The group has its own parallel government.

The subpoena ordered the district judge to appear at the VFW Hall on Harvey Mitchell Parkway at 10:30 a.m. Saturday after he approved the foreclosure of the home of a Kerr County member of the Republic of Texas.

Authorities were investigating the possible fabrication of court records, which is a Class A misdemeanor, said Brazos County Chief Deputy Sheriff Jim Stewart.

The Texas Rangers, Department of Public Safety, Attorney General’s Office and a U.S. Marshal assisted Kerr County sheriff’s deputies in executing the warrant.

Brazos County Sheriff’s deputies were on the scene but were not involved with the warrant, Stewart said.

No arrests were made.
